Acolyte Guidelines

Thank you for serving as an acolyte! The following guidelines will explain what your responsibilities as an acolyte are, and how to do each task.

If you are unable to serve at the time listed on the schedule, please trade with another person from the list of acolytes.

  1. Arrive 15 minutes early. Pick up a copy of the bulletin and the yellow worship attendance card. Put on your alb (robe) and the cincture (rope). Find the candle-lighter and prepare to begin your duties.

  2. Five minutes before the service starts, during the organ prelude, light your candle-lighter (out in the narthex away from the fire alarms), and enter to light the candles. Move to your seat (candle-lighter is placed under the pew).

  3. Worship with the congregation.

  4. Offering: Share the peace with others in the congregation at during the "sharing of the peace"; then, walk up to the altar to pick up the offering plates to give to the ushers. (Suggestion: separate the plates by two's to give to the head ushers--especially if you have difficulty separating all of them.) Sit down again.

When the ushers have finished receiving the offering, and/or when you get a cue from the pastor, get up and move forward to receive the offering plates. Walk to the left side of the altar and hand the offering plates to the pastor.

  5. Communion: At the conclusion of the Lord's Prayer, walk up to the altar to receive Holy Communion. Assist with the distribution of the communion by collecting the empty glasses in the tray. When the communion distribution is complete, go sit down.

  6. Conclusion of the Service: During the last verse of the Closing Hymn, extinguish the candles with the candle-lighter. (DO NOT PUSH DOWN ON THE CANDLE FOLLOWERS so that the wick is buried in the hot wax.) Return your candle-lighter to the sacristy. Hang up your alb, fastening the snaps so that the alb does not fall off the hanger.

  7. LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE (large candle next to the Baptismal Font).
    1. Baptisms--Light at the beginning of sercice; extinguish at the end.
    2. Christmas Season and Easter Season--The candle will be by the altar. Light at the beginning; extinguish at the end.
